What's a bookmarklet?
A bookmarklet is a browser bookmark that runs a script (instead of directing you to a web page). If you place it in your browser's toolbar you can use it on demand on a thread of commends.
To see how bookmarklets in general are installed in Firefox, here's a tutorial video done by friendfeed.com (demostrating their Share on friendfeed bookmarklet).
To install a bookmarklet in Internet Explorer:
- Right click on the the language-specific bookmarklet button
Bookmarklet - Click Add to Favorites...
- Choose Create In Links (yellow folder)
What's a user script?
A user script is small program that installs into a browser add-on that you can use to manage and run custom scripts.
- Firefox - Use the "GreaseMonkey" add-on
- Safari (Mac) - Use the "GreaseKit" plug-in
Once the user script or bookmarklet is installed, here's a screenshot showing how it's used (using the bookmarklet, you have to click the bookmarklet each time you navigate to a new page / refresh the current one):
